FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is there a cost for my child to take lessons through ROCmusic?

No, all ROCmusic students receive a full scholarship that covers two to three instructional days a week, an instrument, performance opportunities, and access to various cultural arts events in the community.

Does ROCmusic provide instruments for students?

Yes, ROCmusic has an inventory of instruments that we maintain for students to check out during the year.

I would like to register my student, however I am unsure about transportation to and/or from classes. Is there any transportation available to students?

RCSD buses are able to drop students off at our various locations. In addition, this year on our contact information form we have added an “opt-in” option for families to be added to carpool lists based on school and/or zip code. If transportation is still an area of concern, we invite you to reach out to use at: rocmusic@cityofrochester.gov

Does ROCmusic have rolling admission?

Before the new school year, ROCmusic accepts students until each program reaches capacity. Once program seats are full, students are placed on a waitlist. If seats become available, ROCmusic will accept students off of the waitlist through the second week in October. We will revisit the waitlist at the beginning of January before the start of our second semester.

My student is currently on the waitlist for a program track; are there other ways they can still be involved in ROCmusic?

Yes; the Gospel Choir and ROCdrummers electives are open to students not enrolled in a program track.

I would like my child to learn an instrument, however I’m concerned two to three days a week is too big of a commitment at this time. Can my child register for only one day of a program track?

Unfortunately, no. ROCmusic programming is designed to provide an immersive music education experience, and each class day builds upon the previous. If you are interested in private instruction, we encourage you to visit the websites of two of our collaborative partners listed below.

How is ROCmusic funded?

ROCmusic programming is funded through grants and donations.
