Cello Faculty

Tyler Brown is a cellist from San Antonio, Texas, with experience in classical, contemporary, and jazz settings. He completed his pre‑college musical studies with members of the San Antonio Philharmonic and served as principal cellist of the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio. During this time, he performed as a young artist at the Cactus Pear Music Festival, competed at regional and state levels, and participated in masterclasses with musicians such as Sterling Elliott. Tyler also studied double bass in his youth, performing regularly in jazz and concert ensembles.

Tyler began his undergraduate studies at the Eastman School of Music in 2024 under the tutelage of Professor Joseph Johnson. At Eastman, he has performed with OSSIA New Music, Musica Nova, the Bach Cantata Series, and the Eastman School Symphony Orchestra, where he is a principal player. He is also a member of Trio de L’ouest, a chamber ensemble that presents recitals each semester. His musical background includes classical, contemporary, and new music, and he has participated in festivals such as Mostly Modern, Green Mountain, and Gateways.

Outside of performance, Tyler is involved in community and campus engagement. He is pursuing a secondary degree in German Studies at the University of Rochester, and has worked under Dr. Crystal Sellers Battle at the George Walker Center for Equity and Inclusion in Music on projects related to representation and food insecurity. He also serves as Vice President of the Black Students Union at Eastman, performing in outreach events in Rochester city schools, and in the annual Black History Month Recital.

Tyler joined the ROCmusic faculty in 2025 and looks forward to supporting young musicians as they begin their own musical journeys.
